Styling The Patio With Outdoor Area Rugs

We love the indoor / outdoor rug, first introduced to the market as a way to style and add warmth to the drab outdoor room, it quickly found its way indoors.

In the past few years the indoor / outdoor rug has become more popular as more beautiful designs are introduced to the market.

We love indoor / outdoor rugs for their vibrant colors that don’t fade, rich texture and great price point.

They are made from durable polypropylene acrylic fibers that withstand high traffic areas, kid’s rooms, and play areas. They are stain resistant, can be cleaned with mild detergent and hosed down in the back yard; perfect for busy homes.

You can find indoor / outdoor rugs, throw pillows, throw blankets and much more at CarmelDecor.com

Tips for Setting A Romantic Table

How about spending Valentine’s Day at home this year and celebrating with the family including the kids, it’s a day to let everyone in your life know how much you love and appreciate them; why not do a simple and elegant dinner at home. We love a feminine and romantic table setting for Valentine’s dinner. It’s not that difficult to pull together a memorable table.

Remember it is Valentine’s Day and roses are a classic; try a few small arrangements on the table instead of a large one.

Pick a color; we love a soft romantic pastel like lavender, so soft yet commands attention.

Candles are a must; we love to place them on holders with sparkle and shine.

We also love an eclectic mix of china, flatware and stemware; bring out the good stuff and use it to celebrate your love.

Design Trend: Sunburst Mirrors For The Home

I’m not sure if sunburst mirrors can be called a trend; I have been buying and loving these most beautiful mirrors for more than two decades. I remember in my first apartment I purchased two small ones with convex mirrors in the center, I couldn’t have paid much for them, and although they were not large or expensive, it was so luxurious to have them hanging on the wall. As my design business grew as well as my budget I continued to look for, collect and use these iconic and radiant mirrors wherever I could.
The history for the sunburst mirror dates back to Louis XIV who picked the sun as his iconic emblem and was known as “The Sun King”. The resurgence of this decorative mirror happened during the 1940’s Hollywood Regency period. It was the perfect fit for the highly glamorous and over the top style of that era, and auction houses reportedly were receiving high bids for these ornate vintage mirrors. With the introduction of new materials, such as plastic, and artisans these mirrors were forged and gilded and collected by many. Today the sunburst mirror has wide spread appeal and is made from a variety of materials in many styles.

There are very few rooms that can’t look more beautiful and pulled together without a sunburst mirror, whether hung securely over a bed or a mantel.

We love the timeless and classic style of the sunburst mirror. How about you, do you have one in your home?

Interior Designer Jamie Drake

We love the bold and colorful work of Interior designer Jamie Drake, named “king of color” by House Beautiful Magazine in 2001.

One of our favorite rooms is this pink bedroom he designed for the Kips Bay Decorative Showhouse in 2007. Creating a room with this level of style and elegance is no small feat; it takes a sharp eye for scale and proportion, a fabulous sense of color and of course great style.

What makes this room so beautiful, and keeps it from appearing as though the walls have been sprayed with Pepto-Bismol? It’s Jamie’s ability to use just the right amount of different shades of pink, his eye for mixing the old and new, and creating depth and layers with the use of texture, and pattern.

Look closely the walls are upholstered in a beautiful pink moiré, the bed is covered in contemporary rich velvet and the drapery fabric is a monochromatic strip.

The antique mirror hanging on a smooth and glossy lacquered wall, and the rich contrast of dark wood, metal and light colors make this bedroom glamorous and so luxurious.
This is no ordinary pink bedroom, it’s certainly not just for a little girl, it’s fun and playful yet smart and sophisticated.

What do you think?

Design Trend : Brass Hardware For The Home

Brass is back and we love it! For the past couple of years it’s been a growing trend and to the classicist brass never left. We love the warmth and glam of beautiful brass hardware whether it’s in a kitchen, bath, light fixture or accessory.

Brass is a luxury choice, today’s brass is un-lacquered and with age it has a beautiful patina, but before you commit to it make sure you like that patina on your kitchen or bath faucet. And don’t be afraid of mixing brass with different metals, like the kitchen below the pendant lights over the island are like jewelry.

Brass can also be used as an accent in any room or table to add glitter and shine to any home decor.

So, do you love brass as much as we do? Are you considering using brass hardware on your next bathroom or kitchen remodel?

Decorating With Patterns: Chevron

We love the vivid, zigzag pattern of the chevron print; it’s casual and elegant at the same time. The chevron pattern is grown up and sophisticated for the living room, yet fun and easy going in the playroom.

Use the chevron pattern to add a burst of excitement to a room by using it on the floor,

or add interest and color with a chevron pattern rug or a few throw pillows.

Chevron patterns can be used in a variety of colors and scale, the more contrast and larger the scale the more visually stimulating; by using softer colors in a smaller scale the look is more like a texture than pattern.

Since chevron is a geometric pattern it can easily be combined with floral or solids.

We think that the Chevron Pattern is not just a trend it’s here to stay and we just love it! How about you, have you used this pattern in your home?
