Easy Organization Pointers to Keep Back-to-School Tension at Bay

Back-to-school acts as both relief and stress. The former is because as a parent, you can have a bit of time to yourself, now that the children will spend a certain portion of their time in school, whereas it is stressful due to the amount of work you have to do. However, if you proceed in a systematic manner, it isn’t really that much of a monster!

Here are a few easy organizing tips to assist you:

Back-to-school can be chaotic to say the least. Music lessons, book clubs, sports activities – there is a lot to be done. Use dry-erase calendar art decals that double as a bulletin board and wall art, which help to maintain a schedule. These are made of vinyl, so the peel-and-stick system allows them to be put up anywhere.Carmel Decor School Organization
Inspect your house from top to bottom and clean it thoroughly. It is evident that children will bring dirt and dust in the house, so ensure the mudroom has sufficient area rugs so they can wipe their shoes before entering indoors.Carmel Decor School Organization 6
There will be abundant homework, which requires a filing system to keep track of everything. You can use storage baskets for homework and projects – there can be an “In” and “Out” system so that you know what is pending and what has been completed. There are different kinds of storage baskets available – some can even be used to store sports equipment too such as a soccer ball, badminton racket, or roller skates.Carmel Decor School Organization 5

Create a study-friendly spot for your children – the area should have sufficient lighting (not too bright though) and a comfortable stool for sitting. Nowadays, poufs are also being used frequently in children’s rooms because they are cozy and comfy.

Ensure that the child gets a good-sized work surface and don’t forget to unplug the TV or shut off the wireless router, during study-time.

Plan ahead so that you don’t have to rush in the mornings. Think about the following morning and chalk out a schedule. For instance, breakfast foods should be easy to reach. You should also lay out school clothes the night before.

If you have more than one child, consider jotting down a bathroom schedule so that each kid gets an equal amount of time (one kid shouldn’t spend excess time as it delays the schedule).

There is no hard-and-fast rule in this case because each household operates differently. All you can do to lower the stress and chaos is to stick to a fixed routine as much as possible and make modifications when needed

How To Style Bookshelves

A house doesn’t become a home until it has your personality. Nothing says more about you than a collection of your organize books.  A bookshelf not only acts as a holder or display of your precious collection of books but it also showcases your personality. It tells the guests about your personal style, preferences and what you feed your mind with. So, when styling your bookshelves pay attention to who you are and what you are saying about yourself.

Creative use of color

Colors used in styling bookshelves can make an otherwise simple room come to life. You can color your bookshelf to match the room decor. If you have white walls in your living room, your bookshelf can be in vibrant color to complement the decor.

Another innovative idea is to paint the back of the shelf in contrasting colors. Using wall papers in primary colors and geometric prints can make your room look quite exclusive.

People, who love their books, arrange them by colors. This is not only an interesting way to showcase your books but also works as a great decorative idea. Be it your dining room or bedroom, a bookshelf can find a place anywhere you want it to be.

Visual appeal – mix and match

Bookshelves are for displaying books but you can always increase their appeal by adding other objects. You can practically put anything in the bookshelf to make it look interesting. Photo frames, a beautiful sculpture, a bowl full of colorful stones or even seashells, you may arrange your collectibles in the bookshelf to break the monotony. Even a nicely framed poster can find place in your bookshelf also.

Vary book placement

It is not necessary to arrange the books vertically. You can vary book placement by placing some vertically and a few horizontally. You can do this within the same shelf or for rows. One shelf can have horizontal placement and the next one vertical. Small artifacts can be placed on the vertically placed books too.
Varying the placement style helps in reducing visual clutter.

Think in layers

Yes, it is possible to style bookshelf in layers. Your collection of antiques can find way into the bookshelf to create a nice look. Apart from placing them in the bookshelf, you can also hang them outside the bookshelf.

If your budget permits, update your interiors with linen. This lightweight fabric is suitable for summer and having them in neutral colors will complement your brightly colored walls perfectly.
To create a dramatic effect, you can also throw some vibrant pillows on the sofa and make the room come alive with colors.

Preparing Your Home For A Disaster

We have had a few earthquakes in the past couple of weeks in Los Angeles. These relatively small quakes have brought the reality of Mother Nature’s wrath to the forefront of our minds. So we thought it might be a good idea to write a little about preparing your home for a disaster. It doesn’t matter where we live there is always a risk for some kind of emergency, and it’s always a good idea to have a kit available just in case.

  • Don’t forget to include supplies for your pets.

It’s also a good idea to have an emergency kit in your car, and always have a pair of sturdy shoes you can walk with in case you have to abandon your vehicle.

Items to keep close at hand

  • Prescription Medication
  • Prescription glasses
  • Hat
  • Family pictures

Have a plan

  • Pick two meeting spots; one outside your home in case of fire, and one outside your neighborhood in case you cannot return home.
  • Pick an out of state contact for everyone in the family to call and report to.

You’ll need to go through your emergency kit two to three times a year to keep your food supply fresh, and make sure your batteries are still working.

Tools And Tips For Staying Organized At Home

Happy New Year! As soon as we ring in the New Year at midnight I start to think about all the ways I want to redecorate and reorganize our home. There’s no time to waste, on January 2nd all the Christmas decorations come down and are quickly stored away for next December; and I start the year off by reorganizing our storage shed. In the first few days of January I quickly go through the main rooms of the house; once the tree is out of the living room I thoroughly clean the room, rearrange all the furniture and send out the furniture pieces that need to be repaired or reupholstered. I also go through all the coffee table books, throw pillows, and accessories; and start making a pile for the Goodwill. In the dining room the carpet is sent out to be cleaned, the chandelier is polished, and the dining chairs get repaired or reupholstered after all the holiday partying. Than the real fun begins; I start reorganizing the storage areas, kitchen cabinets, and closets. Throughout the year I collect DIY organizing tips and suggestions and try as many of them as I can to keep my stuff organized. Some of the organizing ideas work well and I start recommending them to friends and family, and some are not so great.
Keeping your life organized is a daily task, it’s hard and time consuming at the beginning but once you are use to it and make it into a habit than life gets much easier and less stressful. It does require help and participation from all the family members.
One of the tips I discovered this year that was a tremendous help is “no personal stuff in the common rooms”; so in the living, dining, kitchen and family rooms no member of the family including myself is allowed to leave their personal belongings like, iPod, toys, laptops, shoes, mail etc., this keeps down on the clutter.

Tip number two: I have always been told is to label everything, this year I will including all the plugs on the extension strips.

Tip number three: Use large paper clips for organizing all the cords for your gadgets

Tip number 4: Recycle toilette paper rolls for keeping all those loose wires neat and organized.

Tip number five: Get yourself in the habit of making a seasonal menu, than make sure your pantry has all the necessary ingredients, this will make your weekly shopping trips so much easier.

Don’t get overwhelmed by the task at hand, organizing your home can be a daunting task; take it one bite at a time, try one of these tips a week and see if it makes a difference in your life. I’m sure by spring your home will be a well organized and won’t need to be cleaned.
