Pulling together a home is a creative process, it should be the perfect place for relaxing, hanging out, and accommodating all the activities we would like to attend to in our daily lives. Unlike popular opinion it is possible to design and decorate your perfect home on any budget. However it’s important to know where to splurge vs. save on living room decor.
Style maker secrets: where to splurge vs. save on living room decor
One of the most frequently asked questions in interior design and home decoration is where to splurge and where to save on living room decor. Here are a few style makers secrets for where to splurge vs. save on living room decor.
Splurge on pieces of furniture used most often. Select a sofa of high quality, it doesn’t have to be the most expensive, but a sofa of good quality can be purchased on a budget that will take the wear and tear of everyday use.
Save on trendy items you would like to change often, seasonal decor, and trendy accessories are great for updating a room but are changed often, so don’t spend too much money there.
Splurge on items that are focal pieces, something that will make the room and has a wow factor. Like a beautiful area rug in the living room or entry.
Save on side tables, side tables don’t make a statement and are more about function
Splurge on paint, paint is such a big part of the room, the right color and sheen can make all the difference, so splurge on good quality paint in the right color. Don’t pick color from a small chip in the paint store, bring home a sample and try it on the wall. Look at the color under different light at different times during the day.
As you tackle one of interior design’s biggest challenges: we would love to know what you splurge on and where you save money.

Having guests is exciting as you will get company and can spend some lovely time with them. However, it also means making their stay in your house a comfortable one. The guest room needs to be cozy and comfortable and show your guests that you are happy to have them. Here are a few tips to create a cozy and comfortable guest bedroom that spells style.
Guest bedroom – make it luxurious and comfortable
The first thing that comes to mind when you think of guest bedroom essentials is the bed. Invest in a good one that will ensure your guests get a good night’s sleep. Use clean and crisp linen for the beds. You don’t have to break your bank for getting designer linens. They are easily available at discount stores along with good quality towels. An electronic blanket would add to the comfort and also keep an extra blanket in the closet.
Pillows are a must have for a bed. They make the bed look inviting. So, get a few fluffy ones for your guests to relax. Use throw pillows with colorful designs to add warmth and brightness to the room décor.
When you think of decorating your guest room, you cannot ignore flowers and rugs.
Flowers are always a nice addition to any room. They make the room look bright and when placed in a guest bedroom, they tell the guests how welcome they are. So, keep fresh flowers in a beautiful vase and see how the room looks stylish.
Check that the bathroom has extra towels and bathrobes and the closet has enough hangers. Essential amenities like toothpaste, shampoo, soap and comb should be kept in the guestroom. To show your care and love, get a basket of toiletries and decorate it for your guests.
A small basket of snacks kept in the room will prove how good a host you are.
Your guests need to feel welcome in your home. Make the guest bedroom look special with your thoughtfulness. A cozy area rug or scented candles on a tray on the bedside table can make the room look cozy and luxurious and make you the best host.

Boys will be boys and their rooms will have their own characteristic- shoe marks on the floor, soccer balls on the bed, and their favorite cartoon characters on the wall. If you have a teenage boy at home, the cartoon characters will get replaced by the posters of Rihanna or Messi. No matter what age, a boy’s room will always look like one. As a parent, you may want to add warmth or beauty to it and having an area rug is perhaps the best way of doing it.
How to choose kids area rugs
Kids are very particular about their individuality and want their rooms to reflect their personality. If your kid is a fan of Harry Potter, having an area rug with Harry Potter theme will appeal to him. So, it is important to keep in mind your boy’s taste and choose rugs accordingly. Of course, purpose, price and the look will definitely matter.
Area rugs for boy’s bedrooms
Having area rugs in the bedroom of the boys will make the room cozy and warm. Ideally, the area rug should cover the area of both the bed and the nightstand. For toddlers and infants, choose rugs in wool as they would love the soft feeling. Colorful rugs with interesting prints will please them. Nowadays, rugs are available with popular cartoon characters and even alphabets and numbers. Having such a lively rug will allow your kid’s room to come alive.
Rooms of infants and toddlers – get rugs with high endurance level
Usually a lot of activities happen in an infant’s room.
The rugs in kid’s playrooms usually have to endure muddy footprints, stains from spilt milk and lemonade and even crayon marks. It might be a good idea to pick an indoor outdoor rug for this space. It would be easier for you to wash and maintain. Get rugs in bright colors and prints that can easily hide stains.
Have tweens at home? Get rugs in wool
As your kids get older, they will mostly spend their time outside. They may get picky with the décor of their rooms. As posters of Miley Cirus and Justin Bieber start decorating the walls, add elegance to their rooms with woolen rugs. Kids’ area rugs with geometric patterns will suit their choice.
Rugs for teenage boys’ room – let them choose
It is best to involve your boys in the shopping. Since a lot of friends will be visiting them, it is better to have rugs that can withstand heavy footfall. Again, area rugs in wool would be your best bet. Try to choose rugs that would complement the bedding or the walls.
Getting rugs for your kids’ playrooms or bedrooms can become a fun activity if you know what you are looking for.

If the bare floor makes your living room look boring, it is time to go for an area rug. Why only your living room? Your dining room or you bedroom could also do with a modern area rug that adds warmth and softness to the decor. An area rug is an interesting item that defines space and gives a finishing touch to your home decor. It can complement the color scheme of the room and also enhance the atmosphere.
Modern area rug – a great option to decorate a room
Today’s rugs are available in a wide range of materials – wool, cotton, jute, silk and even sisal and grass. A wool area rug is costly but a good investment as it can stand all the wear and tear and still retain its good looks for years. Not to mention the softness and warmth it exudes.
Jute and sisal rugs cost less but are difficult to clean. However, their casual style fit in very well with modern home decor and interesting designs and color schemes make them irresistible.
Buying an area rug – things that matter
An area rug unifies groups of furniture and can help in designating different zones in a room. The size of the rug plays a vital role as larger rugs make rooms look larger. So, when buying a modern area rug the first thing you should consider is the size.
In the living room consider placing the area rug in such a way so as the front legs of the seating pieces rest on it; making the living room feel larger.
While buying a decorative area rug, coordinate the color with the rest of the furnishings of the room.
Patterned rugs are a great option as they enhance the look of the room.
To achieve the best result, mix the patterns. If the furnishings are in floral prints, go for striped area rug. When choosing rugs with designs, make sure that the patterns of the rug and that of the furnishings are of different scale.
Modern area rugs are hot. You can buy a discount area rug that will suit your budget and fit your style. Take advantage of Carmel Decor’s clearance center that offers beautiful rugs at throwaway prices.
Get Cozy This Fall With The Season’s Colors and Textures
Ever since I finished school, Fall has been my favorite time of the year. During my childhood years of course I didn’t want to go back to school, and the shorter days were very depressing. As I grew older, wiser, and more sophisticated I fell in love with Fall. The change in the season, the way light reflects differently, the beautiful fall landscape is so romantic, so rich in color, and the colder climate is welcoming after the summer heat.
Fall 2013 color is Mykonos Blue, and we can see plenty of it in fashion as well as home decor. Soft, silky velvets in beautiful jewel tones.
Mykonos blue is just the right color to compliment the warm oranges and reds of the changing leaves on the trees. Like these rugs by Surya available at Carmel Decor.
We also love the 2013 color of the year Emerald Green, another warm rich sexy hue inspired by natures color palette.
Gold & bronze, warm metals that glitter and gleam, like the sun as it reflects on the changing colors of the trees. These golden colors are the perfect accent to the saturated colors of fall.
Use gold tones in accessories, the little sparkle adds warmth to the fall ambiance.
There are so many different ways to celebrate the Autumn months, and welcome the change with colors and textures all inspired by nature.
Remember shorter days mean longer nights by candle light.
However you celebrate Autumn, I hope you have been inspired.

Mirrors! A Little Self Reflection is Necessary in Any Room
One of the more classic element in any decor is the use of mirrors, no room would be complete without the light and depth that a mirror adds. Mirrors aren’t always clear or totally reflective, in fact they can be mysterious or as reflective as you choose. An antique mirror adds patina and age, a concave mirror distorts the truth, and an old fashioned mercury mirror adds old-world glamor and style.
Dinning rooms and living rooms are great places to add mirrors; according to Feng Shui principles the dining room represents a family’s wealth, and the living room is where the family has gatherings and has parties so the mirror magnifies the festive energy. It’s also the perfect room to play up the luster and sparkle of candle light and mirrors.
Mirrors for centuries have been used to reflect not just so we can see our selves or anything else clearly; but also, mirrors have a reflective quality that adds glamor and sparkle in a seductive, and abstract way.
Whatever your style is I hope you have found some inspiration in the rooms above.
