How To Choose An Area Rug For The Living Room

Having an area rug in the living room transforms the space. It adds comfort and style and also creates a distinguished look.

When selecting a Living room area rug keep in mind a few factors like the layout of the furniture and their colors and also the traffic pattern. Apart from these, you should also consider your lifestyle and the general decor of the room.

Add style to your living room with an area rug

Selecting area rug for the living is not an easy task as a trip to the market would reveal. With so many choices in materials and shapes and designs, you are bound to get confused. However, if you can decide on the floor plan of the living room the task becomes simpler.

If the sofa is set against the wall, you need a big area rug that would cover the space in between and also fit under the front legs of the sofa and chairs.

On the other hand, if the sofa is set in the middle, you need a much larger rug to cover the living area.

Modern home decors use rugs in an innovative way. You may place several small rugs in the living room thus breaking the monotony of space and also adding pop of colors to the living room decor.

The area rug should gel with the color palette of the living room. If the sofa and the table are of solid colors, go for a patterned rug. The secondary color of the rug should coordinate with the color of the key furniture pieces like the sofa or drapes. Similarly, if your living room already showcases a lot of colors on the wall, drapery and the furniture, choose a neutral colored rug to achieve harmony.

There is a large selection of modern area rugs in animal prints available today that can make a living room look outstanding. A living room which has beige, coffee or brown as the dominating color, will look wonderful with a zebra printed area rug.

While choosing rugs, pay attention to the traffic the room receives. Wool and natural fibers like sisal, jute and sea grass add a soft touch to the decor. Rugs made from these materials are sturdy and can withstand heavy foot traffic.

Take a look at Loloi area rugs for your living room a beautiful choice considering their collection and variety. A handmade Oriental rug is perhaps what you are looking for in a living room area rug to make your home stand apart and make every guest appreciate your choice.

How To Use Area Rugs To Define Different Functions In A Multipurpose, Great Room

Today’s modern lifestyle is much more casual and friendly. Families like to all gather in one multipurpose space to spend an evening together and to be able to play games, watch TV, eat, cook, do homework all at the same time. We enjoy hanging out with friends and family while preparing a meal or snacks. This is why today’s contemporary homes with open floor plans are so popular. The ugly utilitarian kitchens of the past have transformed into beautiful, functional rooms. Today’s kitchens are no longer separate rooms they are now part of great rooms. So how can we create a great room that is beautiful and multifunctional, with distinct areas in an open floor plan? How can we create separate rooms without walls? First, we need to create a furniture plan and traffic patterns. However if furniture is placed in a large room with no boundaries it will appear as though it is floating in the space at best and like a warehouse full of furniture at worse. Area rugs are an easy way to anchor and define different areas in a multifunction room. It’s also a way of creating a visual traffic pattern, or highlighting a focal point.

Don’t be overwhelmed by the process of picking multiple rugs for the same space, there are a few easy guides that can help the selection process:
Try using the same rugs; easy breezy, right?

There is a large selection of rugs manufactured today that can be purchased in multiples or different sizes and shapes. So if the living area is a rectangle and the dining table is round, you can purchase the same rug as a rectangle for the living area and let’s say, round for the dining area.
If you love the rug you have and think having two different patterned rugs is too much for your space, try a solid rug in a complimenting color or in a neutral color. Like the picture below

Do you love Oriental or Persian rugs; combine rugs from the same region with similar colors but different patterns. This is an easy way to have an eclectic look that compliments the room’s decor.

The room below is unusual, here is a hide and a patterned rug. The look is very sofisticated and what makes it work is that the two rugs are considered neutral. If you like the style of this room and have never done something like this before you might need to try a few different rugs before it looks “right”.

For a more contemporary style try different solid colored rugs with common colors, like jeweled tones, or colors that are next to each other on the color wheel.

I hope these few ideas will help the selection process, if you have any more tips and tricks please let us know. We love to hear from you.
